What does a cambelt do?

The cambelt, or timing belt, is one of the most important engine components because it regulates the way your engine works by synchronising the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft. Some vehicles have wet belts instead, but these perform the same job. Like most engine parts, both do eventually wear out, and if left they can snap, which can cause some very expensive damage to your engine. On older vehicles, this could even cost more than the value of the car itself.

There aren’t really any signs that warn you that your cambelt or wet belt needs changing, so it’s worth checking in your owner’s manual to see what intervals the manufacturer recommends.
